Fall Break Camping/Biosphere

We took the kids down near Tucson to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air.  We got to the campsite around 11pm and luckily got one of the last campsites. We were the only ones there not hunting!
Happy Kinley waking up the next morning. It was SUPER cold and the leaves on the trees were changing. Fun to see!
Trying to warm up while we worked on getting breakfast made.  We have the best kids ever. I love their love for the outdoors and life!

My best friend!
The kids were helping us find firewood twigs (and bugs just because).

We got a Groupon to take the kids to Biosphere 2.  It was neat to think of what life was like for the Biosperians in the bubble, but a little sad to see how it has changed.

This is the rainforest inside the Biosphere. One of the most beautiful parts.

Turns out that we were the only visitors at 9am that morning, so we got a private tour in some places that Steven and I had never been before. The guide actually took us inside the rainforest. It was very beautiful and felt like being in Hawaii.

Then our guide took us to walk on the beach.
They are about to restore this entire area.   It will be nice to hopefully come back one day and see the marine life back in there.
This is underground. The University of AZ is planning to redo all of this. Everything is kind of dead right now, but the kids still thought this place was pretty amazing. To think people lived in this place (the Biosphere) for a year, completely self sustained is pretty amazing.

After the Biosphere visit, the REAL adventure began.  We were camping in Oracle, AZ and we knew there was a cave near our campsite, but had to find it.  Steven first led me down this narrow, steep downhill road (if you can even call it that). This picture was just the turnoff road to get to the steep road. Once I turned down the "path", a wash started appearing on our left side, making the path more of a trail. There was no way out of the situation except trying to back our new 2015 Sequoia up the steep hill with a curl (oh, and try to stay out of the wash).  How in the word do we always seem to get ourselves into these "adventures" (if you can call it this)?!?!  Needless to say, the kids were the quietest they have ever been, my tires were filled with thorns from the prickly pears that I ran over while trying to stay out of the wash and my car now has some official Arizona pinstripes down the side.  I guess at least we weren't sitting at home doing nothing! Smiles!!

So, it turns out the real cave was about 4 miles down the road from the "path" (closer to our campsite).
This was one of the cave entrances.

Kinley (3) trying to squeeze through the birth canal entrance.
Needless to say, it was much more entertaining watching me and Steven get thru.
Steven pulling out the bottom half of his body thru the tiny space.  Fun memories!
Making our way down from the entrance (we all needed a little help from Steven).
Kinley waits for her turn to be helped down.
After making it out of the other entrance of the cave, the kids wanted to try this one. We could not actually find away in, but I'm sure there was some little hole you could go thru.  The inside of the cave has been very vandalized and there are so many arrows on the walls and different paths to take, it would be petty tricky to find your way out of you went too far in.

When we got back to the car, the kids starting trying to run up this steep embankment. They see adventure in fun in the littlest things. I love it!
They each begged me to take their picture here. This is silly Hunter, hanging on for dear life!
Alton near the top.
Kinley being her cheesy self!
They started digging for "treasures".
We didn't think we would ever get them to stop, so we could head back to start dinner.
Steven had to come to Alton's rescue. The ground was pretty fragile and slippery.
When we got back to the campground, a huge group of these wild turkeys came wandering thru our campsite. It was amazing how close we could get to them. Apparently, they are very tasty. Otherwise, the hunters would have nabbed them in a jiffy.

Our awesome boys sitting around the nighttime campfire.
Getting our marshmallows ready. Yum-yum!
Funny to see Alton with his tongue out. My mom always works with her tongue out when she is in heavy concentration mode. Funny!
Fun memories!
Why is he licking the marshmallow?
She finally made one that wasn't burned to a crisp.
Alton is in marshmallow heaven!
