July 4th 2015

We got the opportunity to head up to Durango, CO for the 4th of July Holiday! We met up with Steven's brothers, Alan and Brian (and their families). We went kayaking, tried a little fishing, explored a goldmine near Silverton and more.
Hunter and his cousin Grant.
Cousins Owen, Miles, Kailyn & Kinley.
The girls were always trying to play baby sitter with their younger cousins.
Kinley wanting to show me Miles's face. Awesome!
The camp host had bunnies and dogs. Kinley loves animals!
Kayaking on lake in Mancos, CO. We also tried our hand at a little fishing, but no luck. I'm sure we chased the fish away with all of the kids and noise. They had just restocked the lake for the holiday weekend and you could see them jumping, but still no luck.
Getting ready for his big run.
Afterwards, we headed into Durango to let the boys try out the kayaking course on the Animas River. Steven went first and it didn't go so well.  The water was so cold he said and now he is determined to go back and conquer the course someday.  It will have to be awhile since they had the big gold mine toxic spill in the river recently. Sad!
Pulling the water-filled kayak out of the river.
Draining it. Shhhh! He did not want me to take these pictures (much less put them on our blog).
Refreshing the kids on how to widdel. Not 5 mins after this picture, Collin (our cousin), nearing cut his finger off.
Steven helping to start a fire.
And success. Yay!!!
We love camp fires!
Our kids' bikes all lined up. They sure had a blast riding them around the campsite.
Sleepy Kinley the next morning.
We woke up to exploding yeast biscuits. This was hilarious!
This is a partially man made geyser built around a natural hot spring.
It is called Pinkerton Hot Springs and back in the day this area was a popular hang out place/bathhouse.
We stopped by this bee farm and Aunt Kalley shared some honey sticks with them. Not tons to see, but they were happy to get out of the car and explore everything we gave them.
Alton, Collin, teddy bear, Kinley, Kailyn and Hunter.
Beautiful stream coming down the side of the mountain on our way to Silverton, CO.
When we pulled into Silverton, we parked at a jailhouse museum.  Next door the firemen were getting ready for the 4th of July celebrations and they let the kids feel what it was like to take control of the powerful water hose. So fun! This is Hunter giving it a try.
And then Kailyn tried it out. Alton and Kiley didn't want to do it.
Then we explored inside of the old jailhouse. I finally got them wrangled into one place!
Collin giving the toilet a try. No privacy when you are in prison.
The kids were intrigued by this old typewriter.
And they were curious about this old record player.  I remember both of these things quite well as a child.  It's amazing how quickly technology has changed.
Cutie Kinley getting ready to go into the One Hundred Gold Mine.
Beautiful Kailyn.
Awesome Alton (who hardly ever will look at the camera).  He looks tired in this picture.
The group.
Inside the mine. Very cool!
Alton was no thrilled to be in there.
Retired mine worker showing us how the drills work.  And yes, he did actually turn that thing on.  The noise was deafening!
Showing us how they use to shovel up materials. I thought we were going to be deaf after this tour!
The kids got to try their hand at panning for gold afterwards.

Hunter and Kailyn. Love my two older kids. They are great at their big brother and sister roles!
While the girls had our adventures with the kids, the boys had some bonding time dirt biking in the high mountains around Silverton.
They came across this old mine shaft.
Very cool!
Steven said they even got above tree line and into snow.
Pretty amazing!
We met up with the boys around 3pm and headed up to Ouray, CO to go to Box Canyon Falls, have dinner and try out the hot spring pool there. While we were in the warm pool, the city firemen drove by on the street and sprayed everyone with their waterholes.  It was super fun!
River as it is about to blast through the waterfall.
The kids have always loved to cling on rocks.
Steven and I got to make breakfast for July 4th. It was so fun to team work.
We spent the day in Durango. We went to a park with live music, walked around the fish hatchery, got ice cream, shopped a little, headed down to the famous Durango train station and watched the parade/fireworks. In this picture, Alton is sitting in one of the old train engines.
This is the history plaque on the station building.
The kids got more candy than they could have imagined.
Reminds me of the old west and LOVE the horses.
Here come the noisy fire trucks.
The kids thought these were funny!
Kinley was tuckered out. It began to rain just as the parade was getting over, so we all headed over to Jimmy Johns sandwiches for dinner.
Alton looks thrilled and Kailyn truly is happy!
That night we found an open park at a school to watch the fireworks.  It was pouring down rain, but the kids didn't seem to care. They had a blast with these glow sticks.
Minnie Mouse Kailyn!
Alton showing off his creation.
Looks pretty cool in the dark!
The next morning when I went to check on the kids this is what I found.  Never a dull moment in our lives!
Wow, Alton found a Texas sized flower.
Group shot taken just before we all parted ways.
After church, we got privileged to have a genealogy lesson my one of Steven's uncle. This was a complete surprise to meet family that they never knew. Turns out Steven's family helped settle Mancos (the town where we camped). So cool!
Final picture taken on the way back home. They were so proud of their elephants!
