Summer 4th of July Adventure (Day 1-2)

Well, let the adventure begin. We started our adventure early Wednesday morning, heading up thru Payson, Gallup, Grants, Albuquerque and in into Cascade, CO to our campsite (Lone Duck Campground).  We got to get out and stretch near the petrified forest. The kids loved the different shades of red and the "glitter" in the tree/rock.  The we took a short pass thru Grants, NM to see where Steven was born. Pretty humbling to see the different places we were raised. He didn't live there very long and was so young he doesn't remember it, but it was still the home he was brought home to.  Then we took the kids by the Albuquerque Temple.
They loved seeing it. It was so beautiful! We pulled into our campsite around 10pm. It was a long haul, but it allowed us to explore the Pikes Peak area a little more today.
This morning we woke up to a chilly 50 degrees. For this thin blooded Arizona girl, it was cold. The kids slept in really late for them. In fact, I had to go check to make sure they were still alive.  Steven made us a yummy eggs, bacon, Orange roll, hot chocolate breakfast.
Our campsite is right by the playground, so the kids have been in heaven.

Love these cuties!

Then we headed out to summit Pikes Peak. The day was beautiful and the drive quite pleasant.  The top was a little chilly and full of gnats, but everyone LOVED it!
This was the original summit house (constructed in 1873).

Just below the summit, we pulled off the road because the kids were dying to play in the snow. They decided while they were free and out of the car, they would scramble up the mountain top. Hiking is definitely in their blood!
Looking north.
They made it to the top! Whoot! Whoot!
Cool looking rock. On their way down.
This was the peak they climbed.
View of pikes peak from the reservoir. Breathtaking!
The boys wanted to take a picture with Bigfoot before we left.

After Pikes Peak, we headed over to Garden of the Gods. It reminded me a lot of Sedona and Moab mixed together.
Loved this arch!
Garden of The Gods memorial plaque.

Hunter (7 1/2 yo)

Alton wanted to sit on Hunter's branch, hence the reason for his long face.
Little explorer Alton.

Then we headed over to the Money Museum. The kids did a scavenger hunt and got a coin in return. They thought this was pretty cool. This museum had some of the rarest coins in the world, pirate treasures, hobo coins, misprinted bills and more. Very fascinating! Finally, we headed over to the Olympic Training Complex. It was amazing and super fun to see some athletes in training. Steven especially loved the swimming pool. The boy gymnasts train here, but the girls train in Texas.
Olympic Rings!
Entrance to the training center.
Our little Olympians getting their racing on!
My hero!
Kailyn tries out the luge.
Pikes Peak forms the back drop. Pretty nice place to train if you ask me!
Olympic Flag!
Kailyn loved the ice skater sculpture.
Can you tell?!?!

We closed out the night having good ole American Frito pies and swam in the heated pool. Such a great day! Can't wait for tomorrow, July 4th! Our country is so amazing!!!
